Wide
Area Networking & VPN Services |
 |
|

 |
 |
The
benefits of a local area network, or
LAN, based at one site within a company
are universally recognised. However, you
may have reached a point where you have
more than one site, perhaps each with
its own network, and you now wish them
to communicate with each other. A wide
area network, or WAN, is the solution.
A wide area network extends your
existing network using external
communications technologies such as
ISDN, ADSL or leased line, or even over
a standard internet connection using
virtual private networking (VPN). There
are many options and not all of them
will be right for your company.
USIC can help you make the right
choices. Our consultants can provide an
independent and professional assessment
of your WAN needs. They will present
their findings and recommend a solution
that is right for you, based on your
technological needs and supplier costs,
ensuring you get the right solution at
the right price.
Virtual Private Networking, or VPN, is
becoming ever more popular as a WAN
solution. The only connection needed at
each site to establish a VPN is a
standard connection to the internet,
this is used as the basis for a secure
virtual network.
The most immediate and obvious benefits
of this are cost related, since you
needn’t have expensive dedicated lines
installed at each of your sites. Indeed
a VPN can be up to 90% less expensive to
implement than the alternatives.
Indirect benefits might include routing
voice calls between sites through the
VPN to reduce communications costs.
The other major benefit of a VPN is that
your employees can securely access the
company network from anywhere in the
world.
This has great potential for
home-working or allowing employees on
the road or at client sites to directly
access your LAN and use resources or
access information.
It also has excellent potential as a
tool for technical support. In many
cases a field engineer can resolve
problems with your systems immediately
via VPN without the need for the added
cost and time involved in an on-site
visit.
VPN also has its downsides. Since it
requires the use of the internet it may
cause problems for applications that
require high-latency and, of course,
speed may be an issue. USIC will be able
to help you determine if a VPN is right
for you, as well as installing,
configuring and supporting your VPN once
it is in place.

VOIP |
 |
|

 |

VoIP
(Voice over Internet Protocol)
VoIP
(Voice over Internet Protocol) is a way
to make phone calls using the internet
as the transmission method, rather than
a landline. You can make and receive
calls from other VoIP users, mobile
users, and people with ordinary
landlines. The integration between any
ordinary line and VoIP is complete and
undetectable to callers.
VoIP can be implemented in several ways,
from a software program on your computer
used with a headset and microphone to
adaptors used with regular analogue home
phones or you can use dedicated VoIP
phones which look and act like regular
phones but have specially designed chips
to improve call quality.
VoIP is very cost-effective. There are
two charges made for traditional phone
calls. First you pay for the exchange
line rental and secondly for the actual
call. Compare this with data charges.
Normally you pay for Internet access at
a flat monthly rate irrespective of the
time that you use. Hence VoIP calls are
effectively ‘free’.
Free VoIP calls are typically restricted
to users who make ‘calls’ to other users
who have PCs connected to broadband. If
you need to make calls to people who are
not on broadband then you can use our
breakout services. This means that you
can cross the globe on a data network,,
‘break out’ locally at the remote end
and make a call to a traditional
landline telephone or a mobile phone at
a much reduced cost. USIC offer a fully
integrated VOIP solution.
Business travellers can also USIC VOIP
services via the internet access offered
in hotel rooms, airports and other
wireless hotspots. Again this is an
extremely cost-effective way to make
long distance calls without incurring
expensive telephony call charges.
